National Library for Health

NLHlogoWho are they?

The National Library for Health (NLH) is a knowledge service committed to supporting the education and lifelong learning needs of all National Health Service staff in England and Wales. It is a modern hybrid service comprising of a digital hub and various NHS funded and commissioned services and products.

The challenge

The NLH provides a large amount of information and cutting edge research, not only to teaching hospitals and medical students, but to all NHS professionals and those involved in the care of others. In order to provide a slick and efficient service, the NLH required a simple way to catalogue and store all its learning resources. Due to the high volume of material, it was important to put a system in place which would make searching through the repository of information fast and hassle-free.

The solution

Compendle has given the NLH a gateway to its learning resources by integrating with its e‑learning repository. People seeking health related knowledge can now log in and search the repository for the information they need. They can also gather resources in their personal resource pool and use them to build custom courses, tailor made for a particular purpose, group or individual. Once a course has been built, Compendle allows users to publish it as a SCORM conformant e‑learning package.

Going forward

The NLH is growing all the time, and Compendle is playing a key role in the modernisation of this essential knowledge service. By allowing users to share and deliver learning resources, Compendle is localising a nation-wide service and making it fit for purpose in the digital age.

Chartered Management Institute

CMI logoWho are they?

For the last fifty years, the Chartered Management Institute has been promoting the art and science of management. As a chartered body, the Institute sets the standard when it comes to management development.

The challenge

Last year the Institute decided to change their curriculum. They wanted to develop their existing Diploma in Management into a new qualification which would map to the National Qualifications Framework at Level 5. The Institute wanted to take the paper workbooks learners had been using, and replace them with more flexible e‑learning. The Institute was also looking for a solution that would allow them to add other information and resources to the course material.

The solution

The Institute required an easy way to map the new qualification to the framework, and Compendle allowed them to do this themselves with a minimum of fuss. Because Compendle makes it easy to organise and manage learning resources, the Institute was able to rearrange the course and structure it exactly as they wanted, without any outside help. They were also able to do away with any superfluous material and bring in additional relevant learning resources.

Going forward

The new course incorporates a wide range of electronic resources, and the qualification reflects the fact that people learn in different ways. Using Compendle, the Institute can also customise their e‑learning by swapping images, adding company specific content and changing the colour and logo of the interface. Rebranding the e‑learning is quick and easy, and it allows the Institute to tailor the courses they create to specific organisations.

Leeds City Council

Leeds City Council logoWho are they?

Leeds is a lively city, with more than 750,000 people living within the city boundaries. It is Leeds City Council that caters for them, providing over 500 services for the people of Leeds.

The challenge

When the Council decided to upgrade their Office program, they took the opportunity to exploit cutting edge technology by opting for an e-learning solution. They called on MyKnowledgeMap to develop a unique e-learning resource and tailored virtual e-learning environment. Once the system, branded ‘e-learnIT’ was in place, the Council wanted to make the most of their new VLE when it came to training employees.

The Council had a lot of their own training material, mostly in the form of PowerPoint presentations. They were keen to utilise the resources they already had, however they wanted to integrate them with new materials which they could develop themselves.

The solution

The Council used Compendle to create their own courses to distribute to their employees. They were able to import the PowerPoint presentations they already had, and combine them with newer resources, including e-learning topics. The Council also used Compendle add-on Question Builder to author, edit and publish a wide variety of questions, quizzes and tests. These assessments were then loaded to their Compendle courses, ready to be added to their new VLE. Using Compendle, the Council were able to create complete training and assessment packages which could be published to their VLE or burned to CD.

Going forward

Compendle has given Leeds City Council the flexibility to provide custom-made courses. Going forward, they will be able to manage their learning more effectively and offer more bespoke learning solutions to their employees.

ALPS - Mobile Assessment

Alps logoWho are they?

The ALPS partners are the Health and Social Care faculties of Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds Metropolitan and York St John Universities, as well as the NHS Yorkshire and the Humber. The other bodies involved are T-Mobile, ecommnet and MyKnowledgeMap. The ALPS project is all about using mobile technology to support Health and Social Care students during their work based practice.

The challenge

Assessing students can often be a chore for tutors, especially when their students are on work placements. The five universities involved in the project were using different VLEs, however they all required access to the same template assessment package. The service platform created for the ALPS project allowed tutors to send assessments and supporting materials to mobile devices which the students use while on work-based practice. MyKnowledgeMap was asked to provide tools which would allow the tutors to create and package the assessments for delivery to the devices.

The solution

By providing the universities with site-wide campus licences, they could all use Compendle to customise the same basic template. It didn't matter that they had different VLEs because Compendle works seamlessly with Moodle, Blackboard and other learning environments. Tutors across all five institutions were able to create tailor-made assessments with Question Builder. They could use a wide range of question types including multiple choice, fill in the gaps and free text questions. The assessments could then be uploaded to Compendle and packaged with supporting materials such as additional instructions or extra reading. The students could then complete the assessments whilst at work and submit their answers for marking and feedback.

Going forward

The ALPS project has been a huge triumph, and was recently announced Techworld Mobility Project of the Year. Compendle and Question Builder have played a significant part in the success of the project, contributing to the aim of supporting students by making the assessment process a lot smoother.

Foundation Degree Forward

FDF logoWho are they?

Foundation Degree Forward (FDF) is a national body that supports the development and validation of high quality work-based Foundation degrees.

The challenge

Last year FDF decided to offer a Foundation Degree in Retail. The degree would be piloted by retail giant Tesco and needed to be suitable for both experienced retail professionals and new entrants to the sector. MyKnowledgeMap was the technical developer for the project and set out to create a combination of e learning and online support for the unique programme. It was important that the e-learning could be rebranded by Tesco and other organisations who might want to offer the degree in the future.

The solution

The e-learning provided by MyKnowledgeMap was customisable, and the individual organisations involved in offering the degree were able to use Compendle to rebrand the e-learning. So Tesco could use their own branding, including their logo and company colours. They could also replace standard images with ones more relevant to their employees and add extra content.

Going forward

The pilot has been a success, and Tesco has signed up a further sixty members of their staff to join the two year programme. Other organisations have also signed up to offer the Foundation degree including Booths supermarket. Using Compendle, these businesses will also be able to put their own stamp on the e-learning and tailor the course to their own staff.
